every housewife in the neighborhood paused in her shopping duties to
give him a friendly pat and whisper some friendly words to the long-
tongued dog, which was usually sitting obediently on his haunches as he
waited for his mistress to finish her shopping.

“Hello, Rex, how’s that nice doggy today?” they would ask. Or, “My,
that’s a sweet little dog, aren’t you?” And this puzzled Jan from time
to time. After all, it was true that Rex had a sleek, shining coat and
that he was the epitome of form in what one thought of as the German
shepherd physique, but after all there were usually a half dozen
pedigreed dogs parked outside the supermarket, all of them equally
handsome in their own way. Yet there was not a one among them that
seemed to inspire the response Rex did. He was truly unique in that

Shortly after twilight Dianne looked out the kitchen window of their
ground-floor apartment and saw Kye talking with Olaf Jensen, the
building caretaker’s overgrown son. Like most Vietnamese, Kye was as
lean as a whip but with surprisingly large bones, and tall for a
fourteen year old, Mark had said. He would probably fill out nicely now
that he’d be getting the proper nourishment, but at the moment he
looked like a gaunt little boy beside the muscular teenager of Swedish
heritage he was laughing and talking with, displaying that enthusiastic
carefreeness which had been constantly a part of him the entire three
days he’d been with her.

The observing, curvaceous young wife of two years absently brushed at
her wealth of straight, long blonde hair, sweeping it behind her
shoulders on either side as she let her sultry green-eyes play over the
friendly scene the two made sitting side by side, facing the smoldering
incinerator where Olaf was burning trash for his father. It pleased her
that Kye had made a friend so quickly, though she readily understood
how and why he would with his young, irrepressible personality. (more…)

The small California valley lay quiet under the eerie light of a full
moon. There were a few clouds in the dark sky, but they were so thin
and wispy that they seemed to vanish like gossamer as they drifted
across the face of the moon.

The valley was dotted with small houses scattered in haphazard fashion.
It was hardly a town. There was a general store and a gas station, but
no real center. Most of the houses stood on two or three acres of land;
little homesteads with their own gardens and a few chickens. In a few
years this would be just another suburb of the malignantly growing city
that lay so near, but now it was still a haven of peace and beauty.

The night was warm; it was mid-summer. One of the little farms seemed
smaller and older than the others, or maybe it was just the special
nature of the moonlight. It was way out on the farthest edge of the
valley by itself. In the daylight, with all the magic of the night
stripped from it, it might have looked ragged and untended. But now the
warped boards of the tool shed and barn, the sagging verandah at the
front of the main house, the uneven clumps of wild grass were all a
perfect playground for the moon. The whole place was a contrast of
light and dark, from the white gleam of the ancient wood to the deep
shadows trapped under the thick tangles of trees and bushes. (more…)

The alarm went off with its usual piercing scream. At first there was
no reaction from the two blanket-covered forms in the huge bed, but
then a slender shapely arm appeared out of the tangled mass of bedding
and began to grope blindly across the bedside table, knocking over the
alarm clock as numb fingers managed to still the racket. The arm
collapsed back onto the bed and for several more minutes silence
reigned in the room.

Then two big blue eyes blinked open, half hidden by a thick mass of
blonde hair that spilled in a golden cascade over one of the pillows.
Jill Andersen focused foggily as she stared at the clock, shook her
head and focused again.

“Oh, for God’s sake, Bob,” she said, “something must be wrong with the
clock. It went off a half hour early.” Her eyes slowly closed.

“Mmmmm, yeh,” her husband murmured in a sleep-thickened voice. “I set
it that way.” He moved over closer to his wife and slid an arm around
her, cupping one of her firm young breasts in the palm of his hand.
“Gives us time for a little conjugal bliss before I run off to slave at
